Cedarcide and SLS

We sometimes receive questions about the use of sodium lauryl sulfate (aka SLS) in our products. Because transparency and integrity are important to us, we wanted to let you know what SLS is and why we use it. At Cedarcide, your health, safety and satisfaction always come first.

What Is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate?
Sodium lauryl sulfate is a surfactant—or, foaming agent —that’s used in everything from cleaning products to personal care items, including soap, shampoos and toothpaste. At Cedarcide, we use SLS to give our solutions their sudsy quality, allowing them to more efficiently saturate their intended treatment areas.

Is SLS carcinogenic—Does it cause cancer?
No and No. Research, like that of the American Cancer Society, has continually shown no links between SLS and cancer.

Is SLS Dangerous?
No. While there’s been considerable discussion regarding the safe use of SLS over the years, scientific consensus remains firmly on SLS’s side. Apart from possible eye and skin irritation when improperly formulated, toxicology studies have shown SLS to be a safe and sustainable ingredient that poses no known health risks. In addition, SLS is 100% biobased, biodegradable and it does not bioaccumulate in water or soil, meaning it poses no significant threat to the health and safety of our planet either.

While SLS (and SLES) are intrinsically non-toxic and non-carcinogenic, these ingredients are sometimes contaminated with a known carcinogen: 1,4 dioxane. In fact, 1,4 dioxane is the primary source of concern surrounding the use of SLS. Rest assured, we take every precaution to ensure our products never contain 1,4 dioxane.
